Knowledge Engineering white paper
Intellix has recently released a new white paper on Knowledge Engineering. The white paper describes how the automation of intellectual business processes is performed.
Focus on Knowledge Sharing

Recently the media has placed greater focus on aspects of knowledge sharing and management. The Danish business daily, Børsen, carried a special section on September 4th that dealt exclusively with knowledge sharing. The Editors of Intellix's newsletter have scissored a few headings and quotes that clearly illustrate that Danish companies are more attentive than ever before to the challenges within this area. Furthermore, the articles show there is a demand for systems that can handle knowledge sharing in an intelligent way.

"Lack of knowledge sharing can be expensive. A large number of Danish companies will lower their competitiveness if they don't become better at sharing knowledge both internally and externally."
This is claimed in a survey made by the Consultancy House ICL Invia, which supports the claim in the article.

"People's knowledge is their defence. Knowledge is power, as well as a guarantee against being fired." But "in the long run, no management can accept a state of affairs where their employees are wasting time looking for documentation that has ended up with others, or that the responsibility for this falls outside anyone's area, or that the wheel is re-invented for the fifth time."
That is how Charlotte Steinmar, head of marketing at the Internet consultancy firm Mondo, expresses the situation in the article that expands on her view of knowledge sharing.

Freeze dried knowledge in Carl Bro. The Carl Bro group has introduced a new system that will organise knowledge in simple chains." The goal is to have people who are searching for expertise find everything they need online," says group director Jannick B. Pedersen in the article- where he also briefly describes which areas of knowledge are included in the system.

Article on Intellix

In an article of more than 4 pages, journalist Daniel Broens in PC-World tells about Intellix and the use of artificial intelligence to improve the basis for decision-making. The article is available at the Intellix website.

New employees at Intellix

Intellix has employed Flemming Udbjørg as Market Manager specialising in the insurance area. Flemming Udbjørg, who has more than 30 years experience from the insurance business, comes from a job as Department Head for business development at Provinzial Denmark. We have asked Flemming Udbjørg how a man with his experience and background found Intellix and which tasks he finds it natural to take on:

"Good friends in the insurance business told me that they had contacts with Intellix, and that they needed a person who could at once associate Intellix's products with areas of use in the insurance business, and at the same time who could integrate his knowledge about insurance, business practices etc into the solutions that are developed. And because I have worked with development for many years and from many different angles, I saw a challenge in the job. And since Intellix could see the same challenge, yes, I found a new chair here."

How do you view Intellix's challenges in relation to the financial sector?
"We have a very strong and efficient tool that can create entirely new ways of working with knowledge and knowledge sharing. Our greatest task is to establish a dialogue with business leaders, and understand the challenges they have for us and for our systems so that working together we can create efficient solutions."

Where do you see our solutions being used?
"Because I come from the insurance business my examples come from there naturally. But after having seen the systems and gotten to know them I see many areas of use - from automatic advice and sales on the Internet to internal expert systems that can make expert knowledge available to customers. Also, I see uses within the area of automated case processing support or direct, automated case processing. And that goes for insurance of property as well as for life insurance and pensions. I have not yet seen comparable systems that so efficiently can be used in so many ways in the financial sector. Knowledge is a key word in many areas of business. Therefore, Intellix's main idea of modelling knowledge and making it easily accessible is also a thought that will win ever greater acceptance."

Flemming Udbjørg has already functioned as an external consultant at Intellix since June. Starting from this month onwards, he will be a part of the organisation as Market Manager Insurance. Flemming Udbjørg will take over the role of sales and marketing expert in the insurance area and will be a flexible support in development projects that lie within the sector.

Other employment news

To better meet the continually growing demand from the market, Intellix has hired a Product Management Team Lead. Per Sørensen is a civil engineer with a PhD in statistical analysis of graphics and comes from VKI where for the past 14 years he has worked with different aspects of software projects and development. Per Sørensen will be responsible for the group that will analyse, specify, and communicate requirements and qualities for the company's standard products. Per Sørensen starts at Intellix on October 1st.

To ensure still greater product quality Intellix has strengthened the company's software test team by hiring Civil Engineer Torben Karlson as software tester. Torben Karlson comes from a position at eHuset where he has worked as a developer. Torben Karlson starts at Intellix on 17 September.

Case

Professor Kenton Graviss of Indiana University Southeast has written a case study on C. Lee Cook, part of Dover Resources Company, an engineering company dealing in the area of compressors and pumps.

C. Lee Cook has, with Intellix's technology and the help of Professor Graviss, developed a knowledge model that is an example of how an organisation's expertise, structured into a knowledge domain, can be preserved and managed. The purpose is to provide a simple approach for identifying and organising that expertise and to preserve it in a readily accessible format.

Read the case and learn more about the benefits C. Lee Cook achieved: identification of critical expertise, its organisation and preservation, revelation of the importance of specific knowledge, discovery of knowledge gaps, identification of areas needing technology maintenance, and creation of an accessible knowledge base to support consistent recommendations and communication.

"Simple, Small-scale Knowledge Engineering for preserving Institutional Expertise" - A Case Study by Kenton Graviss, Ph.D., Professor at Indiana University Southeast, Dept. of Computer Science.

Intellix Seminars

Over the past months, Intellix has increased activities concerning seminars and conferences on knowledge management and business automation.
Just after the first issue of the Intellix newsletter went to press, Intellix hosted a seminar at the Raddison SAS hotel in Copenhagen. More than 90 top executives accepted the invitation to hear Carsten Beck (Institute for Future Studies) lecture on the knowledge society and the future and the necessity for businesses to apply systems that can organise knowledge. Additional speakers at the seminar were Charlotte Mark (Accenture) and Christian Liisberg (founder of Intellix A/S). A great number of participants took the opportunity to have a talk with consultants and Knowledge Engineers from Intellix and to bring home a trial version of Intellix software.

In acknowledgment of the growing interest in knowledge systems in general, and Intellix's products in particular, shown by business managers in the financial institutions and in the world of assurance, Intellix has arranged a number of small scale seminars around the country. The seminars have been designed to target the insurance business, and the interest and participation in these half-day sessions has been high.

"We are experiencing increasing interest in the Intellix approach to knowledge mapping and knowledge management in the insurance and the financial sectors. It is evident that the focus on knowledge systems we are now seeing in the media has raised an understanding and an interest in the subject…" says Lennart Garbarsch, Director of Sales at Intellix, and continues: "The seminars are a great opportunity for us to have individual discussions of how Intellix solutions can enhance business processes in a particular company. In the upcoming months, we will continue our effort to reach out and present our solutions and the vast opportunities using Intellix software."

Moreover, Intellix is experiencing increasing interest from various sectors for Intellix experts to provide lectures and presentations at seminars and trade specific conferences.

Recently James Lakes spoke at an Association of County Councils of Denmark (Amtsrådsforening) seminar in Vejle, Denmark. The theme for the day was "Knowledge Sharing and Intranets" and focused on Intellix's perspective on knowledge sharing and the value of providing "executable" knowledge content on organisation Intranets. The assembly of IT and Process Managers found the presentation extremely relevant, valuable, and enlightening.

Intellix has also recently hosted an ERFA group (a group for sharing experiences) on Helpdesk. The group of helpdesk mangers were introduced to Intellix's solutions and software, while discussing and exchanging common experiences and problems.

IF and Intellix

Intellix and the largest Nordic general insurance group 'If P & C insurance'
have entered an agreement and is now deploying an intelligent system for claims handling based on Intellix' standard software.

The solution from Intellix A/S is chosen to realise If's offensive e-Business strategy which will secure If's position as the leading insurance company in Scandinavia.

If's vision is to make a joint system for Norway, Sweden and Denmark and enable easy update of business logics and thereby decrease time-to-market. This will enable IF to treat insurance customers in different countries equally concerning quality but still with an individual dialogue based on case and country.

The solution now covers all claims handling of the area of motor, and makes the foundation of If's generic framework that soon will cover all insurance areas such as housing, damage caused by water etc. The solution starts out as an internal project to support If's insurance advisors, but will later be distributed to If's customers via Internet.

If project manager Rune Meier: "Intellix has been a natural choice for If because it gives us the possibility for a CO-Nordic utilisation of the groups knowledge in favour of our customers who receives a highly competent treatment via the Internet."

The system has been developed in close relations with the consultancy house Cap Gemini, who is responsible for the management of the project and supplier of tecnical consulting.

Intellix receives new funding

An infusion of 10 million Danish Kroner allows Intellix to continue its offensive. Efforts in research and development will be strengthened, while a new sales and marketing offensive is planned that will allow the company to reach a larger part of the Nordic market.

"Our success depends on our ability continually to develop more advanced and user-friendly solutions. We're experiencing a significant increase in demand for intelligent solutions that enable companies to develop and maintain so-called knowledge-based advice and decision support systems. We will be ready to meet that demand in the future. That is why we are concentrating our efforts on more research and development, and we will also be initiating a sales offensive targeting the Nordic market," Ole Rønberg CEO of Intellix says.

Intellix solutions ensure that customers, employees and partners draw on the same business processes and knowledge for sales and advisory activities. In particular, companies in the financial sector have become aware of the new possibilities.

The new funding follows a successful year 2000, in which Intellix A/S had a turnover of 16.5 million DKK, which represents a trebling over the previous year. This success has enabled Intellix to continue its growth and expansion.
